Skyrim Setstage Not Working

I'm trying to reset the Dark Brotherhood Quest (currently at stage 50) so that I can get the 'Destroy DB!' Quest (DB02 stage 220) instead of Sanctuary (DB02 stage 200). I go to the console and type in- SetStage DB02 10 It shows up in the box. When I check my quests, nothing happens. I've been trying to fix it for nearly and hour and nothing has worked. Setstage C00 20. The quest 'Take Up Arms' has a quest ID of C00. Stage 20 is the 2nd stage in the quest, named 'Train with Vilkas'. This command would move you to stage 20 in the quest 'Take Up Arms'. BUT proceeding to use setstage DLC2MQ06 580 does not raise the altar as the Skyrim wiki says it should. I tried disabling Wintersun Faiths and repeating this process as well since that mod turns the center pool into a shrine that gives a blessing and all that, but the problem still persists. Setstage not working. posted in Skyrim Technical Support: Hello everyone! I have been playing skyrim for a while now with some excellent mods. Everything has been working up to par until a glitch in a College of Winterhold Quest. College of Winterhold SPOILER: Spoiler After I finished Under Saarthal and talking to Savos Aren(archmage) The quest Hitting the books didn't trigger.

Serana confronts Vyrthur at the Temple of Auriel

Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Locate Auriel's Bow.
  2. Speak to Gelebor.
  3. Fill the Initiate's Ewer.
  4. Kill Vyrthur.
  5. Retrieve Auriel's Bow.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Serana gazing out over the Forgotten Vale

After learning the location of Auriel's Bow, travel to Darkfall Cave. The cave is very dark, so you may wish to light your way using torches, the Vampire's Sight ability, or light spells. Follow the path, past a frostbite spider until you come to a bridge and what seems like a dead end. There are a few moonstone rocks, and a pickaxe here as well.

Once you try to cross back over the bridge, you will be forced, by either a rock trap or the bridge collapsing, into a very fast moving underground river that sends you downstream. Try to keep your head above the water, unless you have a waterbreathing ability. Eventually, you'll be thrown out of the current, and attacked by a few frostbite spiders. Continue along the path, until you reach a small camp. If you have Serana, she'll make a remark about how horrible the sight is. At this point, you have a few options. There are two visible paths. The first one, right behind the dead Breton, will lead you on a winding path, straight to a room with two trolls. The other path will take you through an area with spiderwebs blocking your way; destroy them to reveal a giant frostbite spider that may be fighting with a vampire. Eventually, you will find a large open area containing two trolls. Alternatively, you may skip the trolls' room by pulling the chain hidden behind the dead Breton's lean-to and taking the passage it reveals.

At the other end of the large cave you will meet Knight-Paladin Gelebor, one of the last two Snow Elves. He tells you that in exchange for his help obtaining Auriel's Bow, you have to slay his brother, Vyrthur, who was corrupted by Falmer, whom he calls 'The Betrayed'. Vyrthur is hiding in the Inner Sanctum of the Forgotten Vale, a gigantic outdoor elven ruin with Ayleid-like architecture. In order to make your way there you must fill a jug, the Initiate's Ewer, with water from five wayshrines: the Wayshrines of Illumination, Learning, Radiance, Resolution, and Sight.

The first wayshrine, the Wayshrine of Illumination, is through the portal Gelebor opens. The Portal appears in the back of the shrine-like building that Gelebor raises from the ground - it might be invisible, with no Quest Marker pointing to it, but walking into the shrine, and up to the back of the wall, you will be able to activate the Portal none the less (check Notes for more info). It leads you to Darkfall Passage which you will find it at the end of a long, dark trek through Darkfall Passage. You will along the winding underground trek encounter several leveled falmer and chaurus. Be sure to destroy any chaurus cocoons you come across before they have a chance to hatch. To get to the wayshrine, just follow the winding path, illuminated by tube worms, which look like odd pink flowers that retract into their tubes when you come near - they also emit a small amount of pink light to guide the way. The Shrine is tended to by Prelate Sidanyis.

The Wayshrine of Resolution

The second wayshrine, the Wayshrine of Sight, can be found soon after emerging from Darkfall Passage into the Forgotten Vale and is tended to by Prelate Athring. It is to the north of the path that climbs up out of the entry vale through the arches, and west/northwest of the Forgotten Vale Cave.

The third, the Wayshrine of Learning, tended to by Prelate Celegriath, will be found after continuing up the path, passing through a narrow pass inhabited by frostbite spiders, then dropping down to a narrow river valley. The wayshrine is located just downstream from where the path reaches the river bank. After crossing the river below the third wayshrine, zig zag southwest and northwest up the steep path to a large, frozen lake. Beware the two dragons, Naaslaarum and Voslaarum, that will attack you as you cross the frozen lake (if you have killed the dragon in Dragon Rising).

The fourth wayshrine, the Wayshrine of Resolution, is above the northwest bank of the lake and tended to by Prelate Nirilor. Don't forget to pick up a Shout from the large rock jutting out from the middle of the frozen lake south of this wayshrine. Two dragons will break through the ice when you get close to the rock.

Skyrim Setstage Not Working Together

The fifth and final wayshrine, the Wayshrine of Radiance, is north of the Wayshrine of Resolution. It can only be reached after a long, arduous trek through Forgotten Vale and Glacial Crevice. Before entering the Glacial Crevice, take a right down the last bone bridge. Keep going and you will come to a small Falmer hut which houses Unknown Book, Vol. III, 'FAIRE AGARWEN LIFE RECORD' (See Forgotten Vale Books Quest). Go back and enter the entrance to Glacial Crevice. The initial path through Forgotten Vale takes you through a series of Falmer dwellings nestled in among the cliffs above the river, and connected by a series of rope bridges and stone ramps. Fight your way through the leveled Falmer that call this area home, then enter Glacial Crevice. This area consists of a series of glacial chambers with icy ledges and rope bridges that ascend among a scattering of Falmer tents. Dispose of the many leveled Falmer that occupy this zone until you once again emerge out to Forgotten Vale. This final part of the Vale consists of a confusing maze of Falmer tents and platforms crowded within a series of narrow, twisting canyons. Pick up the Unknown Book Vol. IV from a hut in the second village, before the wayshrine. The ascent to the Wayshrine of Radiance, tended to by Prelate Edhelbor, is a tunnel containing several Quicksilver Ore veins found on the canyon floor at the very end of the Falmer village.

Vyrthur destroying Auriel's Chapel

Down the path from the Wayshrine of Radiance is the Inner Sanctum. Upon entering, you will find many frozen Falmer and chaurus in the entry chamber. Many of the Falmer hold items that can be looted, which may cause one or more of them to break out of their icy state and attack. Place the Initiate's Ewer on the pedestals to open gates as you make your way to Vyrthur's chamber. During battle, he causes the ceiling to periodically collapse as he awakens several waves of Falmer and chaurus to attack. When all frozen enemies are gone, he will collapse the rest of the roof on you and a cut scene will commence. You will wake up with Serana telling you to get up and get on the balcony. You will be able to move during this scene but cannot take any other action during the dialogue sequence until Serana's confrontation with Vyrthur is completed. After she releases him, you will be free to act and it is up to you to finish him off. The temple balcony is above the frozen lake near the Shrine of Resolution, so if you blast him off the balcony but want to loot his body for some ancient Falmer armor, then look down on the lake below. When Vyrthur is dead, a wayshrine will appear and Gelebor will come through. He will be surprised at the real reason for Vyrthur's actions, and thank you, telling you that you deserve to carry Auriel's Bow. He will also bless some Sunhallowed arrows for you if you ask, and remain there if you wish to come back for more at any time.

Notes[edit]

  • You may use Auriel's Bow to blot out the sun. It will not be permanent but will only last until 7pm (which is sunset; you can shoot out the sun again the next day, as the sun will rise at 5am).
  • After a wayshrine is opened, it will contain portals to three of the other four opened wayshrines, as well as to Darkfall Cave.
  • At the end of this quest there is an opportunity to gain a second permanent follower. Right after you kill the boss, Serana will stop following you around and you can fast travel away to grab a second follower. There isn't a direct return point, but you can fast travel back to Forgotten Vale and use the portals, then run quickly back through the castle and finish the quest by speaking with the NPC waiting for you and taking Auriel's Bow. This time, your second follower slot should be permanent - though you should make sure to have two followers for 'Kindred Judgement' and any plot quests that are instanced. You can swap your other follower, but never dismiss Serana or you will lose the second slot.
  • If you have not killed Naaslaarum and Voslaarum it is possible for one of them to fly to the balcony and interfere in the fight with Vyrthur. They can even kill him for you.
  • South of the Temple balcony is a hanging valley with a waterfall pouring from it down to the frozen lake. This valley is the location that the Emerald Paragon gives access to, and can be reached from the balcony by using the Become Ethereal shout and careful cliff walking.

Bugs[edit]

Note: Nearly all of the bugs mentioned below occur because Gelebor, Serana, or Vyrthur have uncompleted scripts running. Be sure to allow any dialogue they are speaking to complete before taking further action. Also, make sure that the scripted actions with the Initiate's Ewer and the Wayshrines have completed before going on to the next wayshrine.

  • When you have finished collecting the ewer, and are about to pour it in the basin, it won't react and you will be stuck.
    • If you have this problem, open the console and enter GetStage DLC1VQ07 . If it returns 132.00, that means that somehow the quest progressed past the next stage of the quest. Since you cannot go back stages, the only way to solve this problem would be to use SetStage for every stage past 'Gain Entry to the Inner Sanctum' until the current stage number is above 132 (meaning SetStage DLC1VQ07 200 , completing the quest, giving you the bow, and starting the next quest). This will mean skipping quite a lot of stages, but there's no way to fix this bug at the moment without skipping.
    • Alternatively you can use console command coc DLC1FalmerTemple01 and SetStage 110 (assuming you are just stuck at the basin).
    • If coc is useless, and your queststage is 110, use the sapphire paragon. You must use console command tcl, and then you can gain entry to the Inner Sanctum (remember to use tcl again after gaining entry). Then, leave from the Inner Sanctum via the door, and Serana will be with you again.
  • When given the objective to fill the Initiates Ewer, one of the wayshrines may not give you any water making the quest impossible to complete.
    • Reloading and visiting the wayshrines in a different order may fix this.
    • If you can't get water because Skyrim thinks you are in combat, exit the cell then re-enter it.
  • You may be unable to kill Arch-Curate Vyrthur. ?
    • If that happens use the console command killall. You might have to give Serana the resurrect command in the console afterwards.
  • When you activate the first wayshrine, the portal may not appear. ?
    • The portal may be invisible. Pressing the 'activate' button while standing in the back of the wayshrine may activate the invisible portal.
  • After confronting Arch-Curate Vyrthur and defeating the first wave of unfrozen enemies, he may not react and spawn a second wave, ceasing quest progress. ?
    • Each subsequent wave will only occur after all mobilized enemies have been killed. These enemies are not the frozen ones standing about but are spawned as the waves progress, sometimes replacing the frozen variety. Sometimes they spawn inside the architecture or get stuck in odd places. If area effect spells cannot kill them reloading a save is your only recourse. After each wave there is a pause before Vyrthur gives another rant and unleashes the next wave. Sending an arrow or two, or an area damage spell in his direction may speed things along a little.
    • This can also be fixed by using the command 'killall' in the boss arena (note that both Vyrthur and Serana will be put on the bleed out state as both of them are set to essential at the moment and cant die) but this updates Vyrthur's Scripts and can hopefully allow you to progress, if that's the case and Vyrthur Summons the Ancient Frost Atronach, immediately hit the console, click Serana and use the command 'resurrect', once you kill the Atronach Vyrthur will do a shockwave and run to the balcony, once he reaches the balcony he will die (because he is not set to essential anymore) just click on his corpse and 'resurrect' him, and that'll hopefully allow the following scene and boss fight to progress normally.
  • Knight-Paladin Gelebor may not activate the first wayshrine.
    • Open the console and select Gelebor, enter the code disable, then enable.
    • You can fix this problem by using the console command setstage DLC1VQ07 50. This fix will not work unless Serana is next to you when you first speak with Gelebor. Serana has extensive dialogue exchange with Gelebor which leads to him giving you the Initiate's Ewer. Without the Ewer in your inventory, advancing the quest stage to open the Wayshrine will not help you.[verification needed — is this true?]
  • The final objective to 'Retrieve Auriel's Bow' may not properly register as completed as it should, even after picking it up. A message signifying the quest's completion will still turn up, though the game ceases to progress after that. Neither Serana nor Gelebor will have proper dialogue options, and the following quest, 'Kindred Judgement', does not begin.
    • This bug is fixed by version 2.0.0 of the Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.
    • Use the console command setstage DLC1VQ07 200 to properly complete the final 'Retrieve Auriel's Bow' objective.
  • Serana may attack Gelebor immediately after you finish the first dialogue with him, ceasing quest progression. ?
    • Using the console command killall will fix this. You will have to wait a bit, until dialogue starts between Serana and Gelebor. They will both remain in the crouched, dying position, but they will go back to normal once a new area is entered.
  • After finishing the quest, Serana might not have the dialogue to start Kindred Judgment but will allow you to use her blood to make Bloodcursed arrows.
    • This bug is fixed by version 2.0.0 of the Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.
    • Completing a minor side quest before fighting Vyrthur may fix this.

Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Escort Serana to Castle Volkihar.
  2. Speak to Lord Harkon.
  3. Either join Volkihar or remain loyal to the Dawnguard.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Escaping the Crypt[edit]

After freeing Serana, exit the cavern by crossing the small stone bridge on the opposite side of the room you came in from, where you will be ambushed by two gargoyles. After dealing with them, head up to the door located to the right of where the gargoyles were hidden and enter a small chamber. This room contains little of note, except for the numerous skeletons and leveled draugr that will attack when you pull the lever to open the next barred gate. Head through the gate to come to a huge amphitheater with several leveled undead pacing about. Here you will find a boss chest with leveled loot and a word wall that teaches a word of the Drain Vitality Shout. Behind the Word Wall is an altar table with a few coin purses and 2 random enchanted weapons. After dealing with the enemies and getting the desired loot, head out through the gated door at the opposite end of the room from where you came in.

Harkon giving players his 'gift'

Castle Volkihar[edit]

Now, you are ready to take Serana to her father at Castle Volkihar. This location is in the northwest corner of the map. You will be able to see it from a great distance away. The easiest way to get there is to take the boat at Icewater Jetty, which is reachable on foot, by fast travel, or by hiring a ferryman to take you there. Activate the boat and you will arrive at Castle Volkihar.

Bone hawks circle overhead and a stone bridge lined with gargoyles is in front of you. Beyond the Castle looms. About halfway across the bridge, Serana will initiate conversation: she wants you to keep quiet and let her do the talking.

The Watchman will open the gate when he sees his lady. Open the door and step into the castle where Serana's father is waiting. A vampire named Vingalmo will confront you; but he backs off when he sees Serana and goes to announce her to the group gathered in the main hall.

Skyrim Setstage Command Not Working

Descend into the hall and watch the reunion between Serana and Lord Harkon. After that, Harkon will initiate conversation with you. He will tell you there is only one thing he can give you to thank you: his blood. You now have a choice to make. You can stick with the Dawnguard and you will be allowed to leave the castle in peace for your service, or you can join the Volkihar vampires and take on the mantle of a Vampire Lord.

Choosing Vampire Lord[edit]

If you choose to become a Vampire Lord, Harkon will bite you as everything fades out. When you wake up, you and Harkon will be in the Volkihar Cathedral. Harkon will begin teaching you how to use your Vampire Lord powers, which include raising dead and draining life, as well as a claw attack. He also explains a few things, such as his history and that of his family, if you ask him about them. If you are already a vampire, he will say you just contracted a disease and explain that what he offers you is true vampirism. Alternatively, if you happen to be a werewolf at the time, he will state that he can smell it on you, and can purge you of its filth. Once you are done getting acquainted with your new powers, you will be given a quest to fill The Bloodstone Chalice.

A skirmish between the Dawnguard and the vampires

Choosing Dawnguard[edit]

If you decide to stick with the Dawnguard and refuse his offer, Lord Harkon will cast a spell that will teleport you outside the Castle gate. He also 'advises' you to never return. With the castle locked behind you, your only remaining option is to return to Fort Dawnguard and report this new discovery to the Dawnguard. Once you arrive, you will find the fortress under attack by a band of vampires. After defeating the vampire attackers, you should speak to Isran and tell him what you discovered. Following this report, he will give you the duty of seeking out some of his old allies to create A New Order. Following the Dawnguard side of the questline will cause Fort Dawnguard to be rebuilt and refurnished. You will also have access to Crossbow upgrades and Armored Trolls.

Notes[edit]

  • While in the castle during this quest, you can't draw your weapon, cast spells, shout or do anything aggressive. However, you are free to take anything in the keep without it being identified as thievery, although many of the doors are locked (and can't be picked).
  • You can still become a Vampire Lord if you choose to side with the Dawnguard, though it will not be possible until later in Dawnguard's main questline. If you do, your allegiance to the Dawnguard remains unchanged, though many of the Dawnguard will treat you with hostility and not offer services until you're cured.
  • Siding with the Dawnguard allows access to some unique rewards. Specifically, the Ancient Technology quests allow you to smith crossbows and crossbow bolts, both steel and dwarven, and Lost Relic quests allow you to recover three unique magic items. Similarly, if you join the Volkihar side, the Ancient Power, Amulets of Night Power and Rings of Blood Magic quests help you enhance your Vampire Lord abilities.
  • If you exit the conversation when Lord Harkon tells you to make your choice, and take too long to give an answer, he will banish you from the castle as if you chose to refuse his gift.
  • If you are a werewolf, siding with Lord Harkon will cure your lycanthropy. However, you can become a werewolf again by asking Aela (which will cure your vampirism), and any lycanthropy perks which you had will be restored. You can restore your lycanthropy this way only once. You cannot advance in the Volkihar questline or use any of the vampire clan's services except when you are a vampire.
  • If you try to bring Serana to Fort Dawnguard, she will refuse to go near it, having 'a bad feeling about this place'. Isran will tell you to do as she asked in order to discover what it is all about, even if you tell him she's a vampire.

Bugs[edit]

  • If you have already discovered Castle Volkihar, then after speaking to Serana for the first time when she is released from the sarcophagus she will automatically initiate dialogue with you that normally occurs shortly after arriving at Castle Volkihar. This may prevent you from entering the castle and continuing the quest.
    • This bug is fixed by version 2.0.3 of the Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.
    • You can circumvent this issue by clipping through the wall on the right while standing on the railing. This gets you past the gate and able to access the door.
    • You can glitch through the gate by holding up a large plate/platter against the gate, then using Whirlwind Sprint to sprint into the gate and pass through it. See YouTube for demonstrations of the plate glitch technique.
    • Use the command tcl to move through the wooden gate and enter the castle to continue the quest.
    • use console player.moveto 03003ba8 to meet Harkon inside the castle and that would have you start quest next quest. however, you have to fast travel to complete the quest 'bloodline'.
    • use console disable (02017d59) to remove the gate
  • Serana may not enter the castle with you. The door will lock (requires key) behind you, and trying to talk to Harkon will display the 'this person is busy' message.
    • Target Serana with the console when outside, use moveto player command once inside, then resetai.
  • After accepting Harkon's gift and transforming into a Vampire Lord, you may be permanently frozen, unable to move at all.
  • After your vampire induction, the other vampires in the castle will treat you as a mortal. This seems to happen because exiting the Vampire Lord form reverts the race of the player to what he was before being transformed, and you cannot revert back without using Revert Form. Changing in to a Vampire Lord for the first time, do not stand too close to Harkon, as the transformation causes damage to everyone nearby, which may make castle vampires hostile.
    • If you are unable to start the quest after you have turned into a vampire and you try talking to Garan Marethi, all he tells you is to go back to Lord Harkon and get changed back to a vampire, and you are unable to start the conversation with him. To fix this on PC, do the following: open the console, and type player.setrace <race>racevampire, replacing <race> with the name of your race (e.g., player.setrace darkelfracevampire if you are a Dark Elf).
  • If you refuse Harkon's gift and are returned to the boat landing, the quest A New Order may fail to start.
    • You can fix this by entering either setstage DLC1HunterBaseIntro 20 or setstage DLC1HunterBaseIntro 30, followed by setobjectivedisplayed DLC1HunterBaseIntro 20 1 or 30 1 into the console.
    • If the above does not work playerfollowercount's value may be the issue. To fix this load a save from BEFORE you open Serana's sarcophagus. Dismiss any current followers, using set playerfollowercount to 0 if necessary (may as well to be safe) then proceed through the quest as normal.
  • Harkon may equip the Banish spell, but just stand and stare at you if you refuse to become a vampire.
  • After speaking with Harkon about accepting his gift, he may not transform. If you approach him and talk to him again, he will continue to repeat the same introduction dialogue.
  • After speaking with Harkon about accepting his gift, he may not transform, instead simply standing there. If you approach him and talk to him again, he will make noises ('Yeargh') and still not transform.
    • Start a new game WITHOUT Dawnguard installed (don't enable Dawnguard for NMM users), Save, Exit the game, Install Dawnguard (enable Dawnguard for NMM users), Start the savegame previously made without Dawnguard and the bug will not appear in that Save. This procedure not allow to remove the bug from other savegames made with Dawnguard Installed (Enabled). (Tested with Nexus Mod Manager for an easy uninstallation/installation of Dawnguard)
    • Reload to a save after entering DimHollow Crypt, wait 30 days, then proceed with the quest. this resets all dungeons, characters, etc... this also fixes the bug where you die after being bitten by Harkon.
  • If you choose to accept Harkon's gift, you may die when he bites you and be forced to go back to your last save.
    • Before talking to Harkon, use the console commands setstage DLC1VQ02 40 followed by setstage DLC1VQ02 180. Talk to him and he will say that you have forsaken his gift, but will offer it to you again. Simply accept it and you will gain the Vampire Lord power without dying from his bite.
    • You can also try standing behind one of the tables in the room before Lord Harkon addresses you. From there, he won't be able to lunge at you so you won't die, but you'll receive his gift anyway.
  • When leaving the castle after becoming a Vampire Lord, you may be attacked by the entire castle.
    • This bug may be due to using mods that alter followers behavior. If you can't enter the castle the first time with Serana you can use the console to move in, open the console and type player.moveto 020033b3, prid 02002B74, moveto player and move back to the door. That way the quest remains untouched.
    • You can also change to your human form, go into sneak mode, and type tcl in the console to reach the door to Skyrim undetected. After you exit the castle you may enter again as normal.
    • Write in the console tdetect and they won't attack you but remember when you go out the castle just turn it off by writing tdetect again in the console.
  • If you have a follower along, after you are banished from Castle Volkihar, they may be stuck between the portcullis and front door of the castle when you wake up outside. If you tell them to wait before going in, they may be gone after you're banished.
    • This bug is fixed by version 1.2.4 of the Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.
    • In the latter case, it may be that the follower is actually inside the castle, rather than simply gone.
  • When Harkon is explaining his gift to the player, Imperial vampires are not recognized due to a missing condition check.
