The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Whirlpool Corp. announced a voluntary recall of more than 40,000 refrigerators.

Apr 16, 2011 I have a Magic Chef Range that is probably from the 70's. The Serial Number my wife wrote down is not coming up. The number she came up with is 0310A-7, but when I check with Maytag, the numbers mean nothing to them. Note: Model and serial numbers may (and usually do) contain both letters and numbers. It is important that letters be entered as letters and of course numbers as numbers. For example the letter 'S' (if present) should not be confused with the number '5' or vise versa. The number 2 and letter 'Z' might also be mistaken for each other.

According to repair.maytag.com, 46,000 Maytag, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand refrigerators are being recalled because an electrical failure in the relay — the component that turns on the refrigerator's compressor — can overheat and poses a fire hazard.

The recall includes certain side-by-side and top freezer refrigerators. The affected refrigerators were manufactured in black, bisque, white and stainless steel. They have model and serial numbers printed on a label located on the top middle or left upper side of the refrigerator liner and have the following model and serial number combinations:

•Side-by-side refrigerators: Serial numbers ending with CN, CP, YY, YZ and model numbers begininning with MZ

• Top freezer refrigerators: Serial numbers ending with CA, CC, CE, CG, ZB, ZD, ZF, ZH and model numbers begininng with CT15G4, CTB152, CTL151, CTM152, CTN151, MTB195, MTB215, MTB245, MTF195, MTF215, PTB155, PTB175, PTB195 and PTB215.

Whirlpool has received 23 reports of refrigerator relay ignition, including four reports of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.

In addition to the recalls announced Tuesday, 1.6 million refrigerators were recalled in March for the same issue.
