Monie Love (born Simone Wilson on July 2, 1970 in London, England) is a British female rapper who became one of the first British hip-hop artists to be signed and distributed worldwide to a major record label. She is the daughter of a London-based jazz musician father and her brother is techno musician Dave Angel.Monie began her career as an emcee in the British 'Jus Bad' crew and the group released a single 'Free StyleProud' in 1988.
During that same year, Monie released the single 'I Can Do This' which peaked at #37 on the U.K. Singles chart.
A year later, Monie released another single 'Grandpa's Party' which peaked at #16 on the U.K. Singles chart.
During that same year, Monie Love got commercial success in the United States when she was featured on Queen Latifah's Grammy-winning single 'Ladies First.'
Monie also appeared on the Jungle Brothers 'Doin' Our Own Dang' and De La Soul's 'Buddy.' Soon after, she was signed to Warner Bros. Records, becoming one of the first British hip-hop musicians to be signed to a major label.
In 1990, Monie released her debut album, 'Down To Earth' which peaked at #109 on the Billboard 200, #26 on Billboard's R&B Albums chart and #30 on the U.K. Albums chart.
The first single from the album 'Monie in the Middle' managed to top Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart, #2 on Billboard's Hot Dance MusicMaxi-Singles Sales chart, #7 on Billboard's Hot Dance MusicClub Play chart, and #28 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart, staying on the chart for 14 weeks.
Monie's second single 'It's a Shame (My Sister)' peaked at #26 on the Billboard Hot 100, #2 on Billboard's Hot Dance MusicClub Play chart, became Monie's second number-one hit on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart and peaked at #8 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart, staying on the chart for 19 weeks.
The third single 'Down 2 Earth' peaked at #30 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart, #75 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart, staying on the chart for 5 weeks and #31 on the U.K. Singles chart.
During that same year, Monie was featured on her brother Dave's remix of Whitney Houston's song 'My Name's Not Susan' and was featured in the music video.
In 1992, Monie was featured on the soundtrack to the movie 'Class Act' with the song 'Full-Term Love' which managed to chart at #96 on the Billboard Hot 100, #7 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart, #47 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart, staying on the chart for 11 weeks and #34 on the U.K. Singles chart.
In 1993, Monie released her sophomore album 'In a Word or 2' which peaked at #39 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart and #75 on Billboard's R&B Albums chart.
The first single 'Born 2 B.R.E.E.D.' peaked at #89 on the Billboard Hot 100, #7 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart, #9 on Billboard's Hot Dance MusicMaxi-Singles Sales chart, topped Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart for a week in April of 1993, #56 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart, staying on the chart for 10 weeks and #18 on the U.K. Singles chart.
The song was produced by Prince himself and after that, he asked Monie to write lyrics for Carmen Electra's album.

Simone Johnson[1] (born 2 July 1970),[1] better known by her stage name Monie Love, is a British rapper, actress and radio personality from London. Best known for her singles during the late–1980s through the 1990s, Monie Love currently serves as a radio personality for urban adult contemporary station KISS 104.1 WALR-FM in Atlanta, Georgia.

Love's debut album, Down to Earth was released on 6 November 1990, spawned the singles 'Monie in the Middle' (a track dealing with a woman's right to determine what she wants out of a relationship) and 'It's a Shame (My Sister)' (which sampled the (Detroit) Spinners' 'It's a Shame', written for the band by Stevie Wonder) and featured house-music vocalist and then-labelmate Ultra Naté. The album reached No. 26 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[2] Love also appears on the song titled 'United' from Inner City's third album, Praise.
Love was featured on the LA Reid & Babyface remix of Whitney Houston's R&B hit 'My Name Is Not Susan' in 1991, and appeared in the music video alongside Houston. Love's 1992 single 'Full-Term Love', from the Class Act movie soundtrack, reached No. 7 on the Hot Hip-Hop Singles chart.[3] Love collaborated with Marley Marl on her second album, In a Word or 2 (1993), which featured the Prince-produced single 'Born To B.R.E.E.D.' (which reached No. 1 on the Hot Dance Music chart and No. 7 on the Hot Rap Singles chart), as well as a re-release of 'Full-Term Love'.[3] The same year, Prince asked her to write lyrics for a few songs on a side-project, Carmen Electra's eponymous album, Carmen Electra. Love's last release as lead artist was the single 'Slice of da Pie' in 2000. In 2013, she was featured on the track 'Sometimes' by Ras Kass, from his album Barmageddon.

From 2004 until the week of 11 December 2006, Love was the morning drive host on Philadelphia's WPHI-FM 100.3. 22 December 2006 edition of the Philadelphia Daily News confirmed that Love left WPHI-FM on amicable terms after contract negotiations stalled.[4] Love's departure from WPHI followed soon after her December 2006 interview with Young Jeezy, where the two argued over whether hip hop is dead.[5] Love is also an official MySpace.com DJ, according to her Myspace page. Love resides in Indianapolis,In. and is a single mother to four children.[6] She has a radio show on XM Satellite Radio called Ladies First Radio with Monie Love. It airs Thursdays 6 PM ET and Sundays 8 PM ET. In 2015, Love became a DJ on Philadelphia's Boom 107.9, hosting a morning show from 6 am to 10 am. In 2016, Love co-hosted with Ed Lover on the Ed Lover Morning Show for 'Boom 92' KROI in Houston, Texas. In May 2019, she began hosting afternoons at 'KISS 104.1' WALR in Atlanta.[7]
